| About Elizabeth Colegrove |
When asked why she writes, singer-songwriter Beth Colegrove, of course, quotes a song. One of hers, in this case, although mostly she draws upon the lyrical wisdom of folk artists Lori Mckenna, Patty Griffin, or Antje Duvekot. She answers, "She asks me why I write and I say, well, why do I breathe. It's not a way of life, it's just the life that I lead."
Playing guitar since age twelve, writing music since fourteen, Beth was instructed by folk artist Brooks Williams in Greenfield, MA from 2003 until 2006. Williams describes Beth as, "one of the finest students he has ever had..." Beth currently works and studies out of Boston, MA and plays for an audience of her closest friends in the basement of a community house in East Somerville. She enjoys the deep, philosophical conversations she finds there, but still misses practicing new songs for her dog Truman (who she claims is her best audience) in Connecticut.
Besides writing and performing, Beth loves e.e. cummings, waltzing in large rooms with beautiful girls, riding the T to lechmere and back with no legit reason, busking (the official term for playing music in T stations and earning a mighty three bucks an hour), and walks on the beach in the moonlight (but not the cliche kind). She cries more than she should and at pretty inappropriate times (like during the season finales of the L Word and Dawson's Creek). She watches Friends way more than what's healthy for her. She enjoys long, family jam sessions and polka-version covers of Hallelujah (by Jeff Buckley or Rufus Wainwright; and the general merriment that comes with a good cup of chai, music, and friends.
Beth's currently tying up the loose ends of her newest cd, Ornithology (a collection of songs about birds of all sorts), with the help of producer friend Tommy Scully, who stands over Beth's shoulder and assists with the technical bit of music-making (afterall, we can't expect her to be an amazing songwriter and a computer technician). Ornithology is expected to be released by January, 2009 (at the latest, she swears).
